Lawrence police: Two shooting victims are KU students; suspects still at large

Investigators continue to assess the crime scene at 1621 W. 19th Terrace on Monday, Feb. 9, 2015, a day after three people were shot at the home. As of Monday morning, Lawrence police were still searching for two suspects, who were believed to be armed.

One victim from Sunday evening’s shooting was released from the hospital Monday, while the other two victims, both Kansas University students, remain hospitalized, Lawrence police spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said.

The three men were injured around 4:30 p.m. Sunday after an altercation in a home at 1621 W. 19th Terrace culminated in gunfire, McKinley said. On Monday evening, McKinley said he believed two male suspects — still at large — initially entered the lower level of the home just south of the KU campus to commit a robbery.

“Motive appeared to be a robbery,” McKinley said. “I’m told at least one, if not both, suspects were concealed (with a mask).”

One of the victims was taken by air ambulance with multiple gunshot wounds to KU Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., around 5 p.m., according to dispatchers. Two other victims were taken by ground ambulance to Kansas City-area hospitals, where they underwent surgery, McKinley said.

As of Monday evening, the three victims’ conditions had improved, McKinley said.

“The good news is that of the three who are shot, we don’t think any of them have injuries that are life threatening,” McKinley said. “They all got good treatment.”

After the shooting, two individuals fled east from the home, McKinley said, though some witnesses believe they saw the suspects split up and run toward the KU campus.

McKinley said that detectives found evidence and footprints suggesting the two individuals fled east from the home into the field east of KU’s Oliver residence hall, and toward KU’s Ambler Student Recreation Center.

Lawrence and Kansas University police teamed up to search for two men wearing blue jeans and black, long-sleeved shirts, one of whom appeared to be wearing a gun holster. One man was carrying a gray sweatshirt, KU police said, possibly concealing a weapon with it.

The suspects remained on the loose as of Monday night as a few investigators remained on the scene. McKinley said the men are still thought to have weapons with them.

“The suspects did leave (the crime scene) and are believed to be armed,” McKinley said.

The suspects and victims knew one another, McKinley said. Police received some information from the victims Monday, but more detailed interviews have yet to be conducted, McKinley said.

McKinley said while the suspects and victims “were known to one another,” the victims police have talked to “are not coming out and giving specific names of the suspects.”

“We’re making progress in trying to identify the suspects,” McKinley said. “The identification phase comes first, and then comes locating them.”

The first suspect is described as a white male in his mid 20s, 5 feet 9 inches tall, 180 pounds, wearing a gray sweatshirt, a black shirt, blue jeans, a black ski mask and carrying a semi-automatic weapon. The second suspect is described as a white male in his mid 20s, 5 feet 7 inches tall, 200 pounds, with blond hair, wearing a black hoodie, a black shirt with a silver logo, blue jeans and carrying a handgun.

Detectives continued to search the neighborhood and the southern border of the KU campus for evidence Monday afternoon. Around 2 p.m., the police department’s forensic investigations vehicle stopped at the home as officers process evidence inside the home. Lawrence police also called in outside agencies to bring in police dogs to help with the search, McKinley said.
