Second arrest made in Highway 59 shooting

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office announced it has arrested a second suspect in connection with the Memorial Day shooting on Highway 59 south of Lawrence.

Brittany Nicole Smith.

Tuesday afternoon, Brittany Nicole Smith, 22, of Eudora, was booked into Douglas County jail and is charged with first-degree attempted murder and first-degree conspiracy to commit murder, sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Steve Lewis said in a news release.

Edward Joseph Parker.

Tuesday morning, the department announced it arrested Edward Joseph “E.J.” Parker, 25, of Lawrence, in connection with the shooting.

After the second arrest, Lewis said the charges for Parker have been changed to first-degree attempted murder and first-degree conspiracy to commit murder.

Both are in jail with no bond set.

Skylar L. Workman, 24, of Lawrence, was driving southbound on Highway 59 when the shooting occurred at about 11 p.m. May 26. After calling 911, Workman was flown by helicopter to Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, where he is currently recuperating.

Investigators last week said they did not think that the shooting was a random act of violence.
