Weekend wrap-up: Lawrence man sentenced in strange burglary; Jefferson County woman guilty of abusing 2-year-old girl

• A 31-year-old Lawrence man has been found guilty and sentenced to probation in connection with a strange pair of incidents at a mobile home park in February. Blake Robert Hurd pleaded guilty to two counts of theft and two counts of assault after stealing a medium-length Japanese-style sword, a blind black cat and Chinese meditation balls from one mobile home and then breaking into a second home, frightening residents. Hurd was sentenced to one year of probation with an underlying sentence of more than one year in jail.

• A 22-year-old Jefferson County woman has been found guilty of several felonies related to injuring a 2-year-old Oskaloosa girl in July. Lori A. Courter pleaded no-contest in Jefferson County District Court this week to charges of aggravated battery and aggravated endangering of a child. Courter is scheduled for sentencing on July 10, and could face a sentence of probation or more than 11 years in prison, depending on her criminal history.
