Brownback to speak at national anti-abortion event

June 11, 2012

— Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback is scheduled to address the closing banquet of a national anti-abortion group's convention later this month.

The National Right to Life Committee says Brownback will speak June 30, the final day of the three-day gathering in Arlington, Va.

Brownback had a strong anti-abortion voting record in the U.S. Senate.

As governor, he has signed measures tightening limits on late-term abortions, restricting private insurance coverage for elective abortions and imposing health and safety regulations specifically for abortion providers.

He has also signed bills to impose tougher parental consent rules when minors seek abortions and to deny funds to Planned Parenthood.

How ironic. The best reason for abortion is speaking at an anti-abortion convention.

too bad this is the level of debate we get from people who are supposedly in favor of choice...

Cait McKnelly 2 years, 6 months ago

Given that the "level of debate" you choose to engage in is to make unfounded statements without posting sources and making it obvious you would have no problems imposing your "morals" on other people without any hint of compromise, there is nothing left to do but to make fun of it.

ivalueamerica 2 years, 6 months ago

since we all know Margaret Sanger was a racist, she is not the spokesperson for pro choice. You know that and you have been told, yet you keep trying to repeat your sound bites knowing that they are misrepresentations.

That makes you an habitual liar.

I'm thankful our Governor is willing to defend the defenseless and weakest member of society. We have too many selfish people willing to kill an unborn child to carry on with a self centered existence.

Nicely ignoring the vital role that a woman's uterus and health plays in the process.

JayhawkFan1985 2 years, 6 months ago

There are roughly 300 million people in the US. Roughly half are female equating to 150 million females. Are you really suggesting that every year, 1 female out of every 150 have abortions? Of course many of these females are young girls or post menopausal women incapable of having children. Or, are you just making numbers up? Lying for your beliefs is immoral. Jesus said lying is the same as murder.

JayhawkFan1985 2 years, 6 months ago

Or maybe you are counting fertilized eggs sitting freezers having never been implanted in a uterus? If so, that isn't the same thing as abortion.

jafs 2 years, 6 months ago

Maybe.

Should we now deny him equal legal rights as an American citizen because we have a judgement about his use of language?

Alyosha 2 years, 6 months ago

You seem to assume that all pregnancies result in live births naturally.

Check out the number of pregnancies that result in stillbirths or miscarriages.

It's a faulty assumption, and clearly contrary to fact, to believe that all pregnancies result in live births.

So the number you're deploying in order to make your point is inaccurate.

The US aids its citizens and others around the world more generously than any other country. Just because some at the Government trough bite and throw fits when they don't get "their share" doesn't mean that the unborn should pay the price with their life for those who have unprotected sex.

tomatogrower 2 years, 6 months ago

Then are you willing to help out directly with the care and monetary support of some young woman, who can't afford to keep her baby? Have you adopted any unwanted children? How many? Do you volunteer your money and time to places like Big Brothers and Sisters to help children? Put your money where your mouth is. Especially since most conservatives are happy about the billions we spent in Iraq, but not the money spent in our own country. At least, when you replace our infrastructure, we don't blow it up again. Or is that just job security for businesses like Haliburton? or whatever name they call themselves this year.

And if men could get pregnant, abortion would be sancrosanct.

Taxes should be raised to subsidize live birth at a hospital. Taxes should be raised for free, or at least reduced, child care so parents could continue to work. Taxes should be raised to pay for educating said progeny.

I know infants that throw smaller temper tantrums than those that are anti-abortion had their taxes raised to pay for what they are demanding people do.

How do you go about getting a proper fit for jackboots?

Gareth Skarka 2 years, 6 months ago

"The US aids its citizens and others around the world more generously than any other country."

This is so wrong that it's laughable. Seriously. You should read up a bit on the standard of living in other countries.

You guys swallow these absolute falsehoods as fact -- it's no wonder our state and our nation are in such bad shape, when so many of our population are simply delusional when it comes to actual, verifiable fact.

Glenn Reed 2 years, 6 months ago

It would be a strawman argument if it wasn't true...

The pro-life folks will watch a young rape victim suffer on the streets, and offer no assistance.

In fact, they'll create criminal penalties for her if she has an miscarriage. Murder charges, even.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jun/24/america-pregnant-women-murder-charges

But the slightest mention of public housing, food assistance, education, health care, child care for working parents, even simply keeping current public-assistance programs in place; any of those things is defined as "communism" by these pro-life nuts.

Unless you can tie the pro-life movement to a public-assistance program, guesswho's comment is accurate.

If you're going to start claiming others' arguments to be logical fallacies, make sure it actually is.

Crazy_Larry 2 years, 6 months ago

You see where you're wrong, don't you? It's pretty hard to figure out, so I don't blame you if you don't. The unborn are 'unborn' and therefore not a part of society. Only an idiot would think/say otherwise. Bunch of do-gooder, bible thumping, know-it-all, nosy, boogity, boogity, all up in everyone's business but your own. Have a great day!

Hitler didn't think the Jews should be part of society either...your logic is flawed crazy_larry.

Crazy_Larry 2 years, 6 months ago

Not that I expect you to understand, but your logic is actually flawed here. What you are presenting is called a "straw man". The illusion of having refuted a proposition by replacing it with a superficially similar yet nonequivalent proposition (the "straw man"), and refuting it, without ever having actually refuted the original position.

absolutelyridiculous 2 years, 6 months ago

And I would reply, that calling your opponent and "idiot" shows a less than average intelligence. But, as I have learned from most liberal-minded Lawrencians, you are not open-minded, tolerant or civil. Quite the opposite and thank you for proving this fact. When you do not have a relevant point and want to dismiss another's point, name calling and righteous indignation are always a good conversation stopper.

If we are predestined by god, wouldn't that mean that he planned for the abortion to happen, that it was part of his grand design?

DeckDoctors 2 years, 6 months ago

What God predestines can be fouled up by humans who disobey or who kill. As you may recall Adam and Eve created perfect in a perfect world chose to sin and thus started mankind's downfall. Thus the plan was initiated to redeem mankind when God sent His only begotten son Jesus Christ to pay for man's sin and to forgive those who accept this gift of eternal life. John 3:16

Crazy_Larry 2 years, 6 months ago

What a friggin' joke, you are! Man can interfere with gawd's plan now? Have another swig of blood and a bite of body, why don't you? You, and your holy book, are so full of contradictions you can't even keep them straight. It's getting hard to take the religious folks serious anymore. I think you're all crazy, and dangerous too. Reading the B.S. you spew is making me lose what little respect I had for religion and those who follow the bible. Seriously, put a little thought into what you're writing. You're not helping your cause.

Crazy_Larry 2 years, 6 months ago

Crazy_Larry 2 years, 6 months ago

Choose/chose take your pick. I know these formalities are the least of your concerns.

Lisa Medsker 2 years, 6 months ago

Jesus? Isn't that the guy who thinks that care should be taken of the sick... Oh, wait. That's St. Benedict. I think Jesus was the guy who talked about sharing, healing, and loving. So was he a Socialist, or a Communist? Seems to me that there was something in his half of that Bible of yours about not judging. I'm probably wrong, though, since it doesn't seem to support your sermon.

If anyone who chooses not to have children at all makes that choice because they are "self-centered", what does that make the people who force them to give birth? Not judgmental, since that wouldn't be Christian, I'm sure.

Next time I need to know what your god has predestined, I'll make sure I ask you, since you seem to have a direct line on exactly what God thinks, feels, intends, or has planned for me personally, as well as everyone else. (I'm assuming it's a reference to the Western Judeo-Christian deity that you have direct access to...)

He could have just as easily chose to follow religion and still lead a life full of disappointment. Are you positing that all religious people live lives without ever experiencing disappointment?

Pastor_Bedtime 2 years, 6 months ago

Plenty of folks who have a moral compass and a strong sense of spirituality don't subscribe to the "Jesus is the absolute only way" mentality. And the Christian sect has no inherant moral superiority over any other, or greater ability to treat others with loving kindness ~ just look to the Baptists in Seneca.

kuguardgrl13 2 years, 6 months ago

Exactly. It can actually be argued that Atheists are as much if not more moral than those of us who are religious because they do not have a set of requirements other than the human conscious and government laws. To an Atheist, there is no benefit to being a good, moral person other than individual satisfaction. Is that any better or worse than being moral to save yourself after death? If you don't believe there is Heaven or Hell, then you have no reason to be moral other than you feel it's the right thing to do. Christians have morals not only because it is required of us, but also because it is the right thing to do. Anyone can have a moral code, and there really isn't any right or wrong reason to have one. It really doesn't matter whether you do it for a god or simply because it seems right as long as you have a sense of morality to guide your life.

Oh, yeah? The "fetus" can hear, can move and has a heartbeat. That is a baby in the womb. Using scientific terms to disguise the truth? Just look at a pregnant woman rubbing her stomach and smiling. She is soothing her baby.

Crazy_Larry 2 years, 6 months ago

Does it have a social security number? It's not a person yet. How old are you? When's your birthday? What is a birthday? Oh, that's the day you were born, not conceived. A baby has been born and a fetus has not been born. A fetus has no birthday.

DeckDoctors 2 years, 6 months ago

Our failed president doesn't even have a social security number of his own...

KSense 2 years, 6 months ago

What makes a human a human? Or a person a person? Does a social security number or a birthday? What about the millions born before ss numbers were in use? What about the other thousands who are living or deceased who will never know or never knew their bith date? Does not having a ss number or not knowing one's birth date make them any less of a human?

Crazy_Larry 2 years, 6 months ago

I'll admit, the SSN is irrelevant, but a person has a birthday. Ain't no denying that. I'm ready for your straw men now, bring them to me. Or perhaps fish is on the menu...

KSense 2 years, 6 months ago

No scarecrows or red herrings, just a question. Why does having a birth date automatically turn a fetus into a human? Before it is born, it is still a human. If one is talking about a fetus wouldn't they define what type of fetus? For example a cat fetus or a platypus fetus or, just maybe, a human fetus?

Crazy_Larry 2 years, 6 months ago

Because they are now born into the world and independent? Perhaps not totally self-sufficient, but an individual with they're own personhood. Personhood is the cultural and legal recognition of the equal and unalienable rights of human beings. A few attributes of personhood are agency, self-awareness, and a notion of the past and future.

KSense 2 years, 6 months ago

What about my last two questions? If having a personhood (defined as you defined it) qualifys someone as a human, what about all the people who are alive yet without agency, sel-awareness or a notion of the past and future. Examples would be of severly handicapped individuals or someone in a coma. Are they, inspite of having a birth date, no longer human?

Crazy_Larry 2 years, 6 months ago

You said no scarecrows or fish, yet here they come. We're discussing embryo, zygote, and fetus not severely retarded individuals who've been born into this world. They have a birthday... They have personhood. What this all boils down to is that it's none of our business what a woman chooses to do with her body. Forget everything else.

Pro Life/Anti Abortion:

Birth control allows us to prevent pregnancy and plan the timing of pregnancy.

Need birth control? * My Method * Compare Effectiveness of Birth Control Options * Abstinence * Birth Control Implant (Implanon and Nexplanon) * Birth Control Patch (Ortho Evra) * Birth Control Pills * Birth Control Shot (Depo-Provera) * Birth Control Sponge (Today Sponge) * Birth Control Vaginal Ring (NuvaRing) * Breastfeeding as Birth Control * Cervical Cap (FemCap) * Condom * Diaphragm * Female Condom * Fertility Awareness-Based Methods (FAMs) * IUD * Morning-After Pill (Emergency Contraception) * Outercourse * Spermicide * Sterilization for Women * Vasectomy * Withdrawal (Pull Out Method)

People have used birth control methods for thousands of years. Today, we have many safe and effective birth control methods available to us.

All of us who need birth control want to find the method that is best for us. And each of us has different needs when choosing a method. If you are trying to choose, learning about each method may help you make your decision. Use the list of birth control methods above to read about the methods.

Only you can decide what is best for you. And we are here to help. A staff member at your local Planned Parenthood health center can discuss all of your birth control options with you and help you get the birth control you need.

If your policy positions require you to remain ignorant to retain them, probably better to rethink your positions.

Geiiga 2 years, 6 months ago

Your "life begins at conception" argument is opposed to hormonal birth control, because one of the reasons it works so well is that it does not allow fertilized eggs to implant, causing an abortion.

So, again: do we consider human life as beginning at conception or do we ban the most popular forms of birth control?

The nanny-staters thrive on peeking into people's windows and private lives. Maybe it's time we began micro-manage their churches, scripture and private activities like they wish to do women's reproductive capabilities and organs.

Quotes from Barry Goldwater:

"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them."

"I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in "A," "B," "C" and "D." Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me?"

"I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of "conservatism." "

"I think every good Christian ought to kick Falwell right in the ass."

Amen to that! But they'll tell you soon that Barry Goldwater was a radical communist... like William F. Buckley, Jr., who dressed funny and used big words, so must have been a lefty.

And those quotes should be in the forefront of all Republicans' minds come fall. Goldwater had more gravitas in his little toe than Brownie and his cohorts could ever hope to attain. Cait, that's the best post here I've seen in quite some time. I hope you repeat it as necessary.
