— House leaders said that Gov. Sam Brownback's proposed state budget and tax overhaul will get a full review in the legislative process.

The comments by House Speaker Mike O'Neal, R-Hutchinson, and House Majority Leader Arlen Siegfried, R-Olathe, were made in a prepared statement as details of Brownback's tax and budget proposals became more widely known and attracted more criticism.

Brownback, a Republican, has proposed lowering the state income tax rates, but analyses of the plan show that low-income families would see tax increases because of his proposal to remove credits and deductions. His budget plan builds up a $465 million reserve but doesn't increase base state aid per public school student, which has been significantly cut in recent years.

O'Neal and Siegfreid praised Brownback's leadership.

They added, however, that Brownback's proposals will be studied along with others.

“House committees will fully vet the Governor’s proposals,” O'Neal said. “Throughout the committee process, the House will ask hard questions before we move forward. Our goal is to ensure the state has a healthy ending balance, and we have a competitive tax structure that will bring jobs to Kansas.”

Siegfreid said, “It’s an exhaustive process that will continue throughout the legislative session as we evaluate not only the Governor’s proposal, but any other that remain consistent with these basic principles.”

Yeah, because I have a whole lot of faith in the rest of the state's elected officials to "study" anything and make an informed decision that won't hurt our godforsaken state further (is such a thing possible?) and its most vulernable citizens. I am SO RELIEVED!
