A 36-year-old Wyandotte County sheriff's deputy died Friday night after losing control of his car on an icy patch of road in Kansas City, Kan.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported Randy Beery, 36, died at the scene of the accident in the 5000 block of Shawnee Drive, just north of County Line Road in Kansas City, Kan.

A passenger, Katrina Kobe, 26, of Kansas City, was seriously injured and transported to Kansas University Hospital. Her condition was not available Saturday afternoon. Neither Beery nor Kobe were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol accident report, Beery was driving a 2006 Crown Victoria south on Shawnee Drive when it went off the right-hand side of the road and struck a tree. The report does not indicate if the car belonged to Beery or the Sheriff's Office.
