Group wants Topeka Zoo to move elephants

? An advocacy group that wants the Topeka Zoo to send its two elephants to a Tennessee sanctuary plans a public meeting this week to discuss its efforts.

Animal Outreach of Kansas will discuss The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tenn., during a meeting Thursday evening at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library.

The group wants Sunda, a 51-year-old female Asian elephant, and Tembo, a 41-year-old female African elephant, moved to the sanctuary. The Topeka City Council last year voted not to move the animals.

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums issued new standards that would require the Topeka Zoo to have at least three elephants of the same species.

The Topeka Capital Journal reports zoo officials say they will decide the elephants’ future by late spring.
