Wichita attorney sentenced for embezzling from vets

? A disbarred Wichita attorney convicted of embezzling more than $300,000 from military veterans whose funds she administered has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Before her sentencing Monday in U.S. District Court, Janell Jenkins-Foster apologized for what she said was a despicable crime. But she also said she was afraid to go to prison and not get the medical care she needs.

Jenkins-Foster was appointed curator for 18 veterans and conservator for two non-Veterans Administration estates. Prosecutors say over 10 years she embezzled about $318,900 from 11 veterans accounts.

U.S. District Judge Monti Belot sentenced her to less than the 30 to 37 months prescribed by sentencing guidelines, but rejected her plea for home detention. He also ordered her to pay restitution.
