Great pumpkin? Not so much at Kansas State Fair

? The impact of a dry, hot summer is on display at the Kansas State Fair, where the number of vegetable entries is even lower than already decreased expectations.

That includes one of the most beloved fair attractions, the giant pumpkins.

The Wichita Eagle reports that only one so-called giant pumpkin sits in the area in the Pride of Kansas building where crowds normally find a massive display.

Even that one entry, at 366.5 pounds, is puny compared with the 700-plus pound pumpkins that typically dominate the show.

Fair general manager Denny Stoecklein says officials were anticipating a lower vegetable showing, but the number of entries was even smaller than expected.

On the bright side, the pumpkin display is a chance to educate fairgoers about agriculture and growing processes.
