— Kansas legislative leaders are heading to Fort Leavenworth to learn about the state's relationship with the military.

House Speaker Mike O'Neal, a Hutchinson Republican, and Senate Democratic Leader Anthony Hensley of Topeka will lead the delegation's visit on Friday. The trip was planned earlier in the legislative session, but was postponed because of winter weather.

Army officials will explain Fort Leavenworth's role in the military and its contribution to the Kansas economy. The post was founded in 1827 along the west bank of the Missouri River.

Legislators will also view computer simulations with a demonstration of software developed for military training that has applications for first responders. Technicians have created a Greensburg scenario that allows planners to view the southwestern Kansas town before and after a tornado that flattened much of it four years ago.
