Hutchinson seeks $1.3 million grant for affordable housing program

? Hutchinson has applied for a $1.3 million grant to help start a comprehensive affordable housing program.

The Hutchinson News reports the grant is aimed at addressing deteriorating housing and helping low-income residents bring property into compliance with codes.

The city submitted a three-page application to the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Officials will learn next week if they’ll have a chance to make a 10-minute oral presentation June 13.

Nancy Scott, director of the city’s Planning and Development Department, said the proposal includes $580,000 for establishing a Land Trust to buy property for redevelopment as affordable housing.

It also includes $200,000 for matching funds to expand a program run by Interfaith Housing Services that prepares low-income families for home ownership.
