Emporia State University’s president, Michael Lane, to step down

Michael R. Lane, president of Emporia State University, has announced his intention to step down from that position effective June 30.

In a message to faculty and staff, Lane said the decision was related to his decision to interview for the presidency at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., over fall break last year.

“The visit helped (Lane’s wife) Peggy and I realize how much we enjoyed and appreciated the very student-focused environment at ESU as well as the supportive campus and community. The act of visiting the other campus, however, has caused many to question my commitment to ESU,” Lane wrote. “I believe this ongoing concern is detracting from my work that needs to be accomplished at ESU.”

Lane has been president of ESU since 2006.

The Kansas Board of Regents has scheduled a conference call for 11 a.m. Friday to discuss Lane’s resignation.
