Kansas Senate debating budget; bill would leave positive balance of $8 million

? The Kansas Senate is making additional cuts to a proposed $14 billion state budget in an effort to create a revenue cushion for next year.

Senators tentatively approved amendments Tuesday cutting an additional $5 million in state spending. That would give the state a positive balance of $8 million when the fiscal year ends in June 2012 — almost matching Gov. Sam Brownback’s recommendation.

The overall budget, which takes effect July 1, calls for $14 billion in spending, including $6 billion in state revenues.

The Senate measure would reduce aid to the state’s 289 school districts by $226 per student — slightly less than the $232 per-student cut proposed in the House budget bill.

House members expect to debate their version of the budget later this week.
