Wichita man charged after standoff involving his child, sister

? A Wichita man is denying allegations that he used his infant daughter and sister as a shield during a five-hour standoff at a Hutchinson motel.

Deron McCoy Jr. made his first court appearance in Reno County Wednesday after the standoff Tuesday at the Budget Host Inn. His bond was increased to $500,000.

McCoy strongly denied the allegations during the hearing.

Hutchinson police say they were called to the hotel after a report of a custody dispute over his 7-month-old daughter. They say McCoy, who had a gun, refused to come out and used the baby and his sister as a shield when officers arrived. He surrendered after five hours.

The Hutchinson News reports that using someone as a shield or a hostage can constitute kidnapping under Kansas law.
