Leawood businessman sentenced for not paying taxes

March 3, 2011

— A Leawood man has been sentenced to more than three years in federal prison and ordered to pay $5.8 million in restitution for not paying employment taxes for workers at companies he owned.

The U.S. Attorney’s office in Kansas announced Thursday that 41-year-old Jeffrey Phillips was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in federal prison.

He admitted last December that he had not paid employment taxes from 2001 to 2005. He said he withheld tax payments from workers’ checks but did not make about $4 million in payments to the IRS.

Phillips owned JP Holdings, LLC, in Shawnee and a dozen other companies in Kansas and Missouri.
