County prosecutors have yet to file charges after altercation at KU School of Business

Douglas County prosecutors Tuesday had not yet filed formal charges and were still reviewing information after a 49-year-old Lawrence man was arrested Monday night after an altercation with Kansas University public safety officers.

According to the KU Public Safety Office, officers were called to Summerfield Hall, 1300 Sunnyside Ave., home to the School of Business, at 11 p.m. after a custodian said the man refused to leave the building, which was closed. Officers attempted to serve the man with a trespassing citation, and he became angry and refused to sign the citation.

After a five-minute altercation, officers used mace to subdue the man. Some of the mace injured one of the officers, but Capt. Schuyler Bailey said Tuesday no major injuries were reported. The suspect was examined and found not be injured before he was taken into custody.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, the 49-year-old man had a Lawrence address. He was booked into jail on suspicion of battery on a law enforcement officer, criminal trespassing and interference with the administration of justice.

Cheryl Wright, a district attorney’s office spokeswoman, said if prosecutors file formal charges the man could appear in court Wednesday afternoon.

The Journal-World generally does not identify suspects unless they are formally charged.
