Topeka to discipline students for gang clothing

? Students in Topeka will face disciplinary measures for wearing clothes that seem to promote gang activity.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reported Friday that the new policy will be in place for the upcoming school year in Topeka’s Unified School District 501.

The district’s board voted recently to approve the policy prohibiting actions that may appear to further gangs or gang activity, including wearing clothing, jewelry or other items that are “evidence of membership of affiliation in any gang.”

Cindy Kelly, the district’s attorney, said the policy is modeled after one created in Durham, N.C. She said it has various levels of discipline for violators and that it was created with input from building principals and school resource officers.
