Hutchinson council authorizes purchase of last home in neighborhood threatened by sinkholes

? The effort to buy and demolish 37 homes in a Hutchinson neighborhood threatened by sinkholes is winding down.

The Hutchinson City Council on Tuesday authorized the city attorney to use eminent domain to acquire the last threatened house in the Careyville neighborhood.

VigiIndustries is buying and demolishing the houses because of concerns that sinkholes could develop from brine wells on the neighboring property, which the company owns. A VigiIndustries attorney says one property owner has rejected buyout offers. The company acquired the other 36 houses by offering market value plus $10,000.

The Hutchinson News reports that only other home in the neighborhood still standing belongs to a 93-year-old woman who will be allowed to live out her life in the house before the company takes control of it.
