Kansas Boys’ State to begin 2011 session in Manhattan

? Current and former state political leaders will address high school students taking part next week in the American Legion Boys’ State of Kansas.

The week-long event opens on Sunday at Kansas State University.

Scheduled to speak Tuesday are Attorney General Derek Schmidt, who was elected Boys’ State governor in 1985, and former Kansas Agriculture Secretary Josh Svaty (SWA’-tee). On Wednesday, state Sen. Garrett Love, the youngest state senator in Kansas history, will speak, followed Thursday by Senate Democratic Leader Anthony Hensley.

Boys’ State is a leadership program that develops high school students through the formation of mock city, county and state government.
