Mediation postponed in Salina pollution case

? Mediation has been delayed between Salina groups and federal agencies over who will clean up contamination at the former Schilling Air Base in Salina.

Representatives of the Salina Public Entities and the Department of Defense were scheduled to meet in August with a mediator in an attempt to reach a settlement over cleaning up toxins at the base.

Tim Rogers, executive director of the Salina Airport Authority, said Friday that federal agencies asked for the delay, and the parties will now meet in October.

The entities include the city of Salina, Salina Airport Authority, Salina School District and Kansas State University at Salina.

Salina has been working for years to get the Defense Department to clean up pollutants left behind during its 24 years of operating the former base.
