Wellington offers incentives for new residents

? Officials in the south-central Kansas community of Wellington are hoping to grow the population with a series of incentives for newcomers.

The city that calls itself the state’s Wheat Capital has lost population over the past decade. Officials are calculating that with a casino being built nearby and other employers needing workers, it’s a good time for a campaign to attract new residents.

The Wellington Daily News reports the incentives approved by the City Council include tax breaks and other financial help for new residents who build, buy or even rent a home. Other enticements include memberships in the local golf course or aquatic center.

The incentive package will be offered to a limited number of people who must be employed full-time and live in Wellington for at least a year.
