Hot weather takes toll on attendance at Kansas parks

? The brutal heat gripping Kansas is cutting into attendance at some state and federal recreation and historic sites.

The state Wildlife and Parks Department reported Wednesday that use of its primitive campsites is down significantly.

But assistant parks director Linda Lanterman says turnout of swimmers and boaters at many lakes is running high. One exception is Milford Lake, a Corps of Engineers reservoir where some beaches and ramps are closed by high water.

Visitors to the Fort Larned and Fort Scott National Historic Sites are heading to the old Army posts in the morning, to beat the midday heat.
