Topeka interim superintendent resigns

? The interim superintendent of Topeka schools is resigning.

John Morton, interim superintendent for Topeka Unified School District 501, announced Wednesday that he’s resigning immediately for personal reasons related to family and his health.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the announcement came at a hastily called news conference Wednesday evening.

Morton was most recently the school superintendent in Newton, and began his post in Topeka this past week.

Morton, who is 67, said the transition from his position in Newton to Topeka had been “far more difficult” than he anticipated. He said the transition and job responsibilities took a physical and mental toll during his brief tenure. Morton said the decision was his alone.

The board is expected to seek Morton’s replacement immediately.
