Kansas Highway Patrol trooper shot during traffic stop

January 31, 2011

— A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper was in stable condition at a Hays hospital after being shot in the shoulder during a routine traffic stop.

Wichita television station KAKE reported the trooper had pulled a vehicle over on the southeast edge of the city around 11:30 p.m. Saturday when the driver pulled out a gun and fired at the officer.

Ellis County Attorney Tom Drees says a 45-year-old has been arrested and was being held for probable cause on a charge of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer.

The man was being held without bond.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
