Low-key event kicks off Kansas 150th celebration

? Kansas officials kicked off a yearlong celebration of their state’s 150th birthday with a low-key celebration on the south steps of the Statehouse.

Several hundred people gathered Friday to listen to Gov. Sam Brownback and legislative leaders deliver speeches honoring the state’s heritage. Their remarks honored the state’s founders for their determination to have Kansas enter the union as a free state and the grit shown by pioneers and Kansans who survived the Great Depression.

The anniversary is Saturday. Kansas entered the union on Jan. 29, 1861.

The House and Senate also had their own brief observances. Like the outdoor event, they included the singing of “Home on the Range,” the state song.

A few people came in period dress. Among them was Senate Majority Leader Jay Emler.
