Topeka ? Justices of the Kansas Supreme Court took a short field trip to mark the state’s 150th anniversary of statehood.

The justices heard cases Thursday afternoon in the newly restored Old Supreme Court Chamber inside the Kansas Statehouse. The court had held session in the Statehouse until a new judicial center was built across the street in the 1970s.

Kansas is marking its entrance in the Union on Jan. 29, 1861, with events throughout the state.

Chief Justice Lawton Nuss began Thursday’s session explaining that the courtroom had been restored to resemble its appearance in 1903. The renovation of the chamber and the entire Statehouse is part of a multiyear effort to upgrade the building and restore it to its appearance of the early 1900s.
