Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback names new corrections secretary

? Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback names El Dorado prison warden Ray Roberts as the state’s new corrections secretary, who will oversee a prison system beset by crowding and questions about its women’s prison.

Brownback introduced Roberts Friday. The governor appointed Roberts after a national search.

The Department of Corrections runs eight prisons and has a budget of $285 million and about 3,200 employees. Several months ago, the number of male inmates began exceeding the state capacity of about 8,300, meaning legislators may have to consider creating more space.

Last year, the National Institute of Corrections recommended tighter procedures at the Topeka Correctional Facility. That came after allegations of widespread illegal sex between staff and female inmates, which the department says were exaggerated.
