Kansas legislators take two-day break after busy week

? Kansas legislators are taking a two-day breather after a big push to clear measures from their calendars last week.

Friday was the deadline for most bills to clear their chamber of origin or be lost for the session. Legislators spent most of the week on measures addressing abortion, voter fraud, school finance and union political contributions.

The session resumes Wednesday with legislators beginning to look at those measures with an eye toward a late-March deadline.

One issue that remains is a bill to cut spending in the current budget year. Republican Gov. Sam Brownback wants to pare spending through June and carry the savings forward to the 2012 budget, which begins July 1.

Kansas also will receive 2010 Census data this week.
