Former Menninger house demolished in Topeka

? A home that once belonged to the founder of Topeka’s Menninger Clinic has been demolished.

Steve Hare, owner of Hare Excavating of Topeka, said his company was hired by the home’s current owner to do the recent demolition. He said the home was found to be unsafe.

The home once belonged to Charles F. Menninger, who founded the world-renowned Menninger Clinic with his sons Karl and William. It’s also believed to be the last home Menninger lived in before he died in the 1950s.

Hare told The Topeka Capital-Journal that some materials from the house will be recycled.

In 2002, the Menninger Clinic partnered with Baylor College of Medicine and The Methodist Hospital. In 2003, the facility’s operations moved permanently from Topeka to Houston.
