Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department retiring two drug-sniffing dogs

? Two mainstays of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department are retiring after sniffing out millions of dollars’ worth of drugs.

Rommel, a 10-year-old German shepherd, and Max, an 8-year-old Belgian Malinois, were being honored at a reception Wednesday afternoon at the Sedgwick County Courthouse.

Rommel is assigned to Deputy Hank Cocking, who plans to keep him in retirement. The sheriff’s office says that since being purchased in 2002, Rommel has sniffed more than 4,500 vehicles and located drugs valued at more than $29 million dollars. He’s also credited with apprehending 156 suspects.

Max will remain with his handler, Deputy Ben Romero. In the past seven years, Max has sniffed more than 3,100 vehicles, located illegal drugs valued at more than $1.6 million dollars and conducted 89 tracks for fleeing criminals.
