— A former waitress at a Kansas Mexican food restaurant has been sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison for poisoning salsa.

Yini De La Torre pleaded guilty last year to twice adding a toxic pesticide to salsa at Mi Ranchito restaurant in Lenexa. She was sentenced Tuesday to 87 months in prison.

The 20-year-old says her husband told her to do it and threatened to hurt her if she spoke with investigators.

The first incident happened Aug. 11, 2009, when 12 diners got became ill after eating lunch. The second incident was Aug. 30, 2009, when 36 patrons became ill at dinner.

Federal prosecutors say sales at the six Mi Ranchito restaurants dropped by $250,000 in the two months after the poisoning.

"87 months in prison" is not nearly enough, is my opinion. Isn't this a case of attempted murder?

How long will it be before she is eligible for parole?

And what about her husband? "Her husband told her to do it and threatened to hurt her if she spoke with investigators."

It seems to me that he should be headed to prison also.
