Kansas Star Casino opens near Mulvane

? The opening of the second state-owned casino in Kansas was a big draw on the day after Christmas.

KAKE-TV reported that more than 200 people were waiting in line before the doors of the Kansas Star Casino opened at 8 a.m. Monday. By 11 a.m., more than 3,000 people had visited the casino about nine miles south of Wichita.

The casino is on the Kansas Turnpike at the Mulvane exit. The building that opened Monday is actually an interim casino, with 1,310 slot machines, 32 gaming tables and three food venues.

A permanent casino that will be 70 percent larger is expected to open in 2015. The current casino will then be converted into an events and equestrian center.

Dodge City’s Boot Hill Casino and Resort was the first state-owned casino to open in Kansas. The third, Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., will open next year. Its target opening date is in February.
