Historic Hays House closed after fire
Council Grove ? The historic Hays House 1857 Restaurant and Tavern in Council Grove will be closed until further notice because of a fire.
The fire started early Wednesday at the regionally popular restaurant. No one was injured.
WIBW reports that the owner says the kitchen, which was located in an addition to the building, was completely destroyed. The rest of the building is covered in soot but intact. The fire did not spread to any other buildings.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
According to its website, the Hays House was opened in 1857 by Seth M. Hays, the grandson of Daniel Boone. Its customers have included Jesse James and George Armstrong Custer.
