Fraud suspected by health contractor

? A top executive of a Kansas nonprofit corporation that provides mental health services for thousands of Kansans has lost his job as federal and state officials investigate whether he embezzled as much as $1 million in Medicaid funding, authorities said.

The official with Kansas Health Solutions was either fired or resigned after the nonprofit began an internal investigation following questions about the possible embezzlement arose two weeks ago, The Topeka Capital-Journal reported Tuesday.

The nonprofit’s chief executive officer, Michael Goldberg, confirmed the ouster and said it was unclear if the man had accomplices. He also said the exact amount of money missing from the organization has not been determined.

“We were recently made aware of suspicious activity involving our accounts,” Goldberg told the newspaper. “It’s very disturbing. It is clearly in our interest to cooperate with any investigation.”

Goldberg said in an interview Tuesday he could offer only limited comments because of the ongoing investigation and could not discuss the departure of the suspect, whom The Associated Press is not naming because no charges have been filed.
