8 convicted in $20 million marijuana conspiracy

? A federal jury convicted eight people of trafficking more than $20 million in marijuana across the country.

The jury’s verdict was returned Thursday after a trial that began on April 8 in federal court in Kansas City, Kan.

Attorney Barry Grissom says in a news release that 60-year-old Gladstone McDowell of Kansas City, Mo., was the leader of the ring. He says the group had outposts in Phoenix, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Nashville, Tenn.; Patterson, N.J.; Pittsburg, Penn.; cities in Florida and in Jamaica.

Prosecutors said the traffickers acquired marijuana from sources based in Arizona and distributed the drug across the country through parcel services. McDowell’s organization laundered money through bank accounts based in the United States and in Jamaica.

Sentencing is set for Sept. 12.
