Fire near Sterling burns 5,000 acres before being extinguished

? A fire fueled by strong wind burned up to 5,000 acres in south-central Kansas before firefighters got it under control.

The fire started Sunday morning near the Rice/Reno county line. With the help of farmers who hauled water to the blaze, firefighters extinguished the blaze by about 6 p.m. No serious injuries were reported.

Sterling Fire Chief Richard Jones says the fire rekindled from a blaze last Friday that burned 400 acres.

Gov. Sam Brownback also declared a disaster emergency after a fire on Sunday burned several thousand acres in Ellsworth and Saline counties. Campers near Horsethief Canyon close to the Kanopolis Reservoir were evacuated.

The National Weather service say there is an elevated fire danger through Wednesday for areas along the Kansas turnpike, primarily west of the turnpike.
