Topeka superintendent recommends closing 4 elementary schools

? The superintendent of Topeka schools says the district should close three elementary schools at the end of this academic year, and another one next year.

Kevin Singer told the district’s school board on Thursday that closing Quinton Heights, Linn and Lundgren schools would save the district more than $1.5 million. He also recommended closing Avondale East Elementary School by the end of the 2011-12 school year, for a savings of $500,000.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the district is trying to address an expected $4.4 million shortfall in state funding this year and next.

Other cuts are expected and the district plans to use funds to address the shortfall.

The board will hold several public meetings in April to discuss the recommendations.
