Fort Riley unit to host sick child whose dream is to be a soldier

April 8, 2011

— A 7-year-old boy with a rare muscular disease is getting his wish to be a soldier with help from an infantry unit at Fort Riley.

Ian Fields will spend April 14 and 15 with the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment as part of the Make-A-Wish Foundation program. An announcement didn't give details about his family or hometown.

Ian will begin his stint in the Army with an enlistment ceremony and testing for his Combat Infantryman Badge. He'll also go through weapons training, small-arms training with machine guns and mortars and helicopter simulation training.

On the second day, Ian will take part in a mission where he saves his squad in mock combat. He'll then receive awards, be promoted to sergeant and be inducted into the corps of noncommissioned officers.
