Lawrence lawyer among those applying for Kansas Supreme Court vacancy

? Thirteen people have applied for a vacancy on the Kansas Supreme Court, including Cynthia Grimes of Lawrence.

The Supreme Court Nominating Commission will interview applicants for the position on Sept. 27-28 and will submit three names to Gov. Mark Parkinson who will make the appointment.

Grimes is a 1984 Kansas University law school grad whose practice area is bankruptcy and creditor/debtor rights.

The vacancy on the seven-member court was created by the retirement of former Chief Justice Robert Davis. Davis died last month just a day after he announced his retirement.

  • Michael Buser, a judge from Overland Park
  • Nancy Caplinger, a judge from Topeka
  • Jeffery Carmichael, a lawyer from Valley Center
  • Robert Frederick, a judge from Lakin
  • Jeffry Jack, a judge from Parsons
  • Donald Jarrett, a lawyer from Leawood
  • Thomas Malone, a judge from Topeka
  • Robb Rumsey, a judge from Wichita
  • Kim Schroeder, a judge from Hugoton
  • Steven Smith, a lawyer from Wichita
  • Merlin Wheeler, a judge from Emporia.
