Wind turbine project at Fort Hays State University hits hurdle

A wind turbine project proposed by Fort Hays State University may have lost some of its velocity.

Fort Hays is seeking permission to build towers for a wind generation project that would use two turbines.

But the Hays Area Planning Commission on Monday voted to ban commercial-scale wind turbines within three miles of Hays city limits. That vote doesn’t kill the Fort Hays project, because the city commission will make the final decision.

The Hays Daily News reports that current city regulations allow towers up to only 125-feet tall within three miles of Hays. Fort Hays President Edward H. Hammond says the college’s tower would have to be taller than 125 feet.

The project would produce an estimated 5 megawatts of electricity, saving the university an estimated $800,000 annually.
