Kansas State Department of Education honors Lawrence schools for excellence

All but one school in the Lawrence school district achieved the coveted “Standard of Excellence” on state standardized tests during the past year for at least one grade level in at least one category.

Of the district’s 22 schools, only Kennedy School didn’t have all of its students — either in a particular grade or the entire school — reach the state Standard of Excellence in either reading, math or science, according to information released Tuesday by the Kansas State Department of Education.

The standard requires that a certain percentage of students either meet standards, exceed standards or achieve “exemplary” scores on the tests, which are administered in third through eighth grades and then once in high school. The standard also sets maximums for the number of students who do not reach such scores.

The honors are gleaned from the same data that are used to measure what’s known as “adequate yearly progress,” or AYP, in conjunction with federal No Child Left Behind legislation.

While the Lawrence school district is “on improvement” because it missed target performance levels for students with disabilities for the past two years, district officials welcomed word that virtually all of its schools had scored overall honors for excellence.

“While we still have work to do — we always have improvements to make — we are very proud of our students, and the hard work of our teachers and support staff to ensure that high levels of learning are continuing throughout the district,” said Kim Bodensteiner, the district’s chief academic officer.

While a school can receive a Standard of Excellence for a particular grade level in a particular subject, here is a list of district schools that received such recognition for buildingwide performance by subject (including science, which is tested in grades four and seven and once in high school):
