Attorney suggests suspect in robbery at Lawrence apartment complex wants to make a plea

A defense attorney indicated a plea was in the works Tuesday morning for a man accused of driving two men to a south Lawrence apartment to commit a September robbery.

Defense attorney Jason Billam told District Judge Peggy Kittel that his client, Christopher D. Self, 19, wanted to waive his right to a preliminary hearing and to have a plea hearing in January.

Self pleaded not guilty to the five charges he faces, but Billam told Kittel that three allegations of probation violations for past drug and gun convictions against his client would likely be part of a plea. The plea hearing is scheduled for Jan. 7.

Self’s two other adult co-defendants in the case, Douglas Bittinger, 19, and Joshua Self, 18, face a Feb. 8 preliminary hearing on two counts of aggravated robbery, two each of aggravated battery and one count of conspiracy to commit robbery.

Prosecutors accuse the three men of participating in a scheme to use a gun to rob two 20-year-old Lawrence men on Sept. 6 at an apartment at The Exchange, 3100 Ousdahl Road. One victim was knocked unconscious from a head wound.

Two Lawrence boys, ages 16 and 17, also face the same counts in juvenile court.
