Judge orders Kansas City man to trial in Olathe motel room death

? A Kansas City, Kan., man will go on trial in the death of a man who was killed with a box-cutter inside a motel room.

Johnson County Judge Stephen Tatum on Wednesday found probable cause to try 23-year-old Maurice O. Stewart for first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, burglary and theft.

Stewart pleaded not guilty to the death of 57-year-old Stephen Cook of California, who was found dead June 29 at the Econo Lodge in Olathe.

The Kansas City Star reports that an autopsy found Cook bled to death from numerous cuts and also had several broken bones.

Stewart had been in the motel room next to Cook. Police say Stewart admitted attacking Cook, but says it was self-defense after Cook tried to sexually assault him.
