Statehouse Live: Governor Mark Parkinson announces appointments to Kansas boards and commissions

? Gov. Mark Parkinson on Tuesday announced several appointments to boards and commissions, including naming Frank Diehl of Lawrence to the Kansas Lottery Commission.

Diehl has been deputy disciplinary administrator for the Office of Disciplinary Administrator, which handles complaints against Kansas attorney.

He has also served as an assistant district attorney in Douglas County, and an assistant attorney general.

Parkinson also appointed Trevor Wohlford, an attorney from Lawrence, and state Sen. Janis Lee, D-Kensington, to the Kansas State Court of Tax Appeals.

Wohlford was appointed by former Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to serve as chief hearing officer. He will now serve as a judge on the court. Lee, who has served in the Senate more than 20 years, will replace Wohlford as the court’s chief hearing officer.

Both appointments are subject to Senate confirmation when the Legislature reconvenes in January.

If approved, Lee will resign from her Senate seat.

“Trevor and Janis will bring their combination of legal expertise and experience in state government to the bench to help ensure that our tax code is applied fairly and equitably,” Parkinson said Tuesday.

The Kansas State Court of Tax Appeals ensures that all property in the state is assessed for tax purposes in an equal and uniform manner in accordance with the Kansas Constitution and state statutes. The Court is composed of three tax court judges and a chief hearing officer who work on disputes between taxpayers and taxing authorities. Additionally, the Court is charged with reviewing tax exemption decisions made by local governments, grievances resulting from technical errors, and correcting tax inequities.
