Restoration of historic mausoleums in Topeka nearly done
Topeka ? A project to restore three historic mausoleums at a Topeka cemetery is nearly complete.
The restoration of the century-old, in-ground mausoleums at Topeka Cemetery began last spring. Corey Thomas, business development manager for Pishny Restoration Services in Lenexa, says the work will be done in the next few weeks.
Cemetery superintendent Lowell Manis says the three mausoleums were built in the late 1880s. They are listed on the Kansas and national registers of historic places. He says they were falling apart, mostly because the original drainage system was clogged.
The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that The Kansas State Historical Society Heritage Trust Fund and private donors paid for the work. It was estimated to cost about $106,000.
Manis says the cemetery will apply for another grant to restore the remaining seven mausoleums.
