Kansas House OKs transportation plan

? The Kansas House has approved creation of a new transportation program on promises of renewed investment in jobs and state infrastructure.

The vote Tuesday was 86-38 in favor of the plan for an $8.2 billion, 10-year program of highway, bridge and other transportation improvements.

House approval sent the bill to Gov. Mark Parkinson, since the Senate had passed it earlier.,

Parkinson had urged legislators to create a new program to follow those enacted in 1989 and 1999.

But some House members were wary of the plan because the state would be allowed to issue up to $1.7 billion in bonds.

There would be other sources of financing, including sales tax revenues and higher registration fees for heavy trucks.
