State plans website for sesquicentennial

? The state plans to launch a website on Friday designed to keep track of the many events being planned to celebrate the state’s 150th birthday next year.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that the website, www.ks150.org, will include a statewide calendar of events and other information related to the sesquicentennial.

Mary Madden, director of education and outreach at the Kansas Historical Society, said the state has not budgeted money for the celebration, but several state agencies will compile special projects.

For example, the Kansas Historical Society will create a workbook for fourth-graders about the history. And the State Library of Kansas is compiling a list of 150 books that Kansans love.

The sesquicentennial celebration officially begins on Kansas Day — Jan. 29, 2011.
