Kansas space museum theater needs renovation work

The 30-year-old IMAX Theatre at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center needs major renovation.

The Hutchinson News reported that the space museum’s IMAX lease expires in 2012, which could lead to changes in the theater’s format.

The vice president of marketing and development, Marisa Honomichl, says the Cosmosphere has three options. One is to renew the lease with IMAX and stay with the film format and dome configuration. Another choice is to renew the lease with IMAX but update the theater to a digital format. Finally, it could let the lease expire and upgrade to a regular digital theater.

A decision from the Cosmosphere Board of Directors is expected by the end of the year.

The costs could range from $750,000 to $1.5 million.
