National baking firm building Topeka plant

A company that makes baked goods plans to build a 135,000-square-food production plant in Topeka, bringing about 52 jobs to start.

Officials of Allen Foods announced the project Friday. Regional vice president Dick Bay says prep work on the site is expected to begin soon, and the plant could be open by May 2011.

Allen Foods makes such products as Oroweat breads and Thomas bagels.

The company is a subsidiary of Bimbo Bakeries USA.

The new plant will be in the Central Crossing Commerce Park in south Topeka.

Allen Foods officials say the plant will be big enough for two production lines, but they’re planning to begin operations with just one.
