Vandal suspected in zoo’s bobcat breakout
Topeka ? A 26-pound bobcat described as docile is back in custody at the Topeka Zoo after someone pried upon its cage in an apparent act of vandalism.
Zoo workers noticed the bobcat, named Johnson, was missing around 6:30 a.m. Thursday.
Topeka police and animal control officers joined zoo staff in a search.
Johnson was spotted about three hours later about 30 yards from its pen near the Tropical Rain Forest area. Johnson was subdued with two tranquilizer darts and taken to the zoo’s animal hospital for observation.
City spokesman David Bevens describes Johnson as “domesticated, docile and declawed.”
Johnson had also gone walkabout in a similar incident last August, when someone opened its cage and that of a North American porcupine.
